PIG AND POULTRY FAIR 2006 FACES INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

UK pig and poultry sectors are facing major challenges this year. While industry analysts see opportunities in both sectors that are attracting a stream of newcomers, all producers are tackling welfare and environmental issues and these are the driving factors for reinvestment. Increasing energy costs and the effects of bird flu are also presenting challenges.

Addressing current industry issues will be a priority for organisers, the Royal Agricultural Society of England, at the biennial British Pig and Poultry Fair, which will be held on Tuesday 9 May and Wednesday 10 May at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Plans are well underway to make sure the key topics are addressed.

“2006 has got off to a great start for the Pig and Poultry Fair, says Andrea Rutledge. “Exhibitor sales are ahead at this stage compared with the last Fair in 2004. We have a range of new companies exhibiting and joining the major industry players for the two day event.”

Despite not having any livestock on site at the Fair, exhibitors will cover all technical areas of breeding, genetics, nutrition, health, housing and marketing. “We are also including topical seminars with leading specialist speakers to discuss issues like environmental legislation and welfare as well as changes in management systems,” adds Mrs Rutledge.

“This year’s Fair is aimed at all pig and poultry producers, whatever size of operation and system – free range or caged egg production, organic and outdoor pig production and more conventional systems for example. “We are also hoping to attract other livestock and arable farmers who are looking at the opportunities in the pig or poultry sectors.”

The British Pig and Poultry Fair is open from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 9 May and from 9am to 4pm on Wednesday 10 May. More than 300 exhibitors are expected to attend and at least 10,000 visitors. Entrance and parking are free.
