Exhibitor Preview News
Introduction:
The British Pig and Poultry Fair takes place on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 May at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. A biannual event, the Fair is organised and presented by the Royal Agricultural Society of England. The site will be open from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 9 May and from 9am to 4pm on Wednesday 10 May. More than 10,000 visitors are expected over the two days. Entrance and parking are free.
The largest technical event for the pig and poultry sectors, the Fair attracts a wide range of exhibitors and includes all key players in both industries, all taking advantage of the first class platform from which to present their latest developments – see below. As a consequence, producers have a one-stop shop covering all the technical areas like housing, health, nutrition, genetics, biosecurity and the environment.
Relevant seminars open to all
Running throughout both days are two seminar programmes. In the Pig Central Feature the theme will be ‘building confidence across the chain’ with discussions on herd health, environmental issues, staff training and investment in housing.
New in the combined area this year will be seminars hosted by organisations with involvement in the pig and poultry sectors. One of these is the Environment Agency that will use the seminars and its stand at the Fair to kick off its six- month campaign to help farmers in applying for permits under the new IPPC regulations and in new regulations affecting farm waste disposal.
See more details of the Fair and a preview of seminars on the web site www.pigandpoultry.org.uk. For more information and any of the photographs mentioned below contact Karen Wright, 01780 767222, Karen@karenwrightpr.com

Equipment
1 Viscon UK - New chick counter
The chick counter, type CC-3-30SP, is used for the accurate counting of one day old chicks. Key features are its minimal surface, its ability to automatically cope with different chick sizes, its micro-processor control system (with the option to connect it to a PC) and its friendly handling of the chicks. This chick counter is designed for use in both small and large hatcheries.
Counting is done as the chicks pass under an infrared counting head. Viscon found this to be a very quick and efficient way of counting chicks at the rate of 30,000 per hour. By placing a second unit in parallel 60,000 chicks per hour can be processed. The machine is accurate to two chicks per thousand. Counting is controlled by a micro-processor, which can be connected to a personal computer for administrative purposes.
A display on the control panel shows the number of chicks per box and the total number of chicks counted. The number of chicks per box or compartment is adjustable. The sensor is easily removed for easy cleaning.
Handling of one day olds is of great importance to hatchery customers. Rough handling can adversely affect their chicks. For this reason, both the speed of the belt and the height of any drop the chicks experience are reduced to an absolute minimum.

2 Maywick – brooders and heaters
The latest range of gas-fired brooders and heaters will be on display on the Maywick stand as well as computer-compatible environmental control systems, designed to take full advantage of Maywick heaters and provide the ideal environmental conditions in modern housing.
The SS225XI heater provides excellent heat distribution, while many growers who prefer localised control of heat in brooding areas are catered for by a proven series of canopy brooders, each available with a choice of temperature control systems.
Environmental controls include programmable whole house controllers, inlet vent regulators, high-efficiency fans, alert alarms, ridge-mounting chimneys, dimmable fluorescent lighting and winches for adjusting air vents and lowering brooder, feeder and drinker lines and curtain divisions.

3 Abasage Systems – new broiler pan and nesting box (photographs available)
New for this year’s Pig and Poultry Fair are the Landmeco Broiler Pan and Landmeco Nesting Box.
The new pan feeding system has four built-in functions: Standard feeding, Kick-off feeding, Closed for feeding and Closed for cleaning. These four functions are achievable by the patented design idea of rotating the feed pipe.
Standard feeding - Pans are filled automatically via the auger. When all pans in the line are full, the auger is stopped automatically by means of a feed sensor mounted in the outlet end of the traction head. Once birds have eaten sufficient feed level in the last pan on the line (the control pan) to fall, the pans are refilled automatically.
Kick-off feeding - Initially, all pans are filled in the same way as for standard feeding. The feed pipe is then rotated allowing each pan to overfill for chick start.
Closed for feeding - This function allows feed to be provided in portions or individual sections to be taken out of operation.
Closed for cleaning - In this position, both standard and kick-off feeding are sealed off. This prevents water from entering the feed pipe during cleaning.
Landmeco Nest Boxes have four key benefits:
- 20% more space as the egg belt is positioned directly beneath the laying nest.
- Unique design provides laying nest depth of 55cm
- Two piece cover on nest allowing easy inspection of nest box
- Easily accessible egg belt from either side of the nest boxes

4 Roxell - New layer feeding system and broiler nest (photos available)
Roxell is introducing two new pan feeders at the Pig and Poultry Fair for the layer industry. Poolaï is developed purely for rearing pullets. The low pan edge allows day-olds to spot the feed within seconds and the 360° flooding keeps the pan full of feed. The oval shaped pan is equipped with a high feed saver rim. Poolaï has an incorporated feed trough in the bottom. A special pan lock prevents them from swinging. This combination guarantees feed remains deep in the central part of the pan.
LaïCa is a new Roxell pan exclusively for layers and for layer parent stock.
The uniquely designed pan in cascade shape prevents selective pecking and thus forces the birds to eat all feed ingredients. Special wings on the cone stop the hens from grubbing in the feed and the high feed saver rim prevents spilling. An incorporated trough in the bottom and the pan lock makes sure that the feed remains in the central part of the pan. Twelve wide grill openings allow easy access to the feed. LaïCa is suitable for use in different housing systems: floor feeding (free range or bio), aviary systems and enriched cages.
Roxell has added the KoKOON laying nest to their range, making a complete package with their KiXoo feeding system and the SPARKcup drinker. KoKOON is a solid, easy to maintain automatic laying nest with bird-friendly nest pads and a ‘soft-touch’– expulsion system. The slats with anti-slip surface have no sharp edges or corners to avoid injuries. Two separated egg belts take care of a fast and save transport of the hatching eggs.

5 Twinpack – new system to transport eggsTwinpack has invented a complete new system to transport eggs – the Eggs Cargo System. Instead of the well-known paper keytrays, they have built a system containing a durable plastic keytray for 30 eggs - a compatible pallet of 1200x900mm, which holds 4 by 3 rows of egg trays. The system has a durable plastic sheet, which goes in between to further increase the protection of eggs during transport. It is guaranteed for seven years. Already, Deans Foods use the system in the UK.

10 Cobb - Optimising broiler growth (photograph Cobb 500 available)
New growth profiles for the Cobb 500 broiler will be introduced by Cobb Europe at the British Pig and Poultry Fair.
The profiles illustrate how to take full advantage of the potential of the Cobb 500 broiler to achieve the lowest production costs by optimising the protein and energy balance in the diets, particularly during the first few weeks.
“With the Cobb 500 broiler there are distinct benefits in slowing early growth by feeding low density starter and grower diets,” says John Vincent, senior product manager. “This approach will improve overall bird health and promotes good organ development, while increasing the energy in the diet after 22 days ensures that the birds finish well and on target.”
The exhibit will be the first since Cobb moved its regional headquarters serving Europe, the Middle East and Africa to Colchester in UK, while retaining an office at Putten specifically to serve the Dutch and Belgian markets. The move brings the regional headquarters closer to the UK production facility, one of Cobb’s four great grandparent production centres serving the global market.

13 SCA NuTec – Tools for improving intakes and lifetime performance
SCA NuTec will be talking to producers about its well-proven feed additives Biacid and Provimax. Used in broiler and turkey diets, Biacid is based on a synergistic blend of organic acids and essential oils for direct addition to feed or for including in the vitamin mineral premix. It encourages feed intake and efficient digestive function.
Improving lifetime production in laying hens is an important issue for producers and SCA NuTec will be promoting the usefulness of Provimax. This is a blend of organic volatile fatty acids and calcium salts of organic acids that is added to the diets of older laying hens and broiler breeders at 1kg/tonne to improve laying persistency, eggshell quality, early embryonic mortality and FCR.
Research by SCA NuTec’s parent company Provimi has shown that by including Provimax in the feed during the second phase of the laying period boosts egg production. One farm trial showed that the inclusion of 1 kg of Provimax per tonne of feed from 60 weeks of lay led to a 2.4% increase in egg production.

16 ACMC - A much needed boost for litter size! (pic: multisuckling pigs)
ACMC is offering producers an extra pig a litter from its AC1 gilt. The dam line, which was developed using genes from the hyper-prolific Chinese Meishan, was launched in 2002. Since then, commercial producers using the line have benefited from improvements to numbers reared - by more than a pig a litter - while maintaining carcase quality, says the company. Records show that one Yorkshire customer is achieving more than 40 pigs born alive from just 11% of his herd. With British producers being urged to raise their game and increase productivity, ACMC believes that this gilt offers huge potential to UK pig farmers.

17 JSR Genetics - Adding value by innovation within the supply chain
The Titan boar is the fastest growing terminal sire that JSR Genetics has ever produced. With producer benefits in excess of £3 per slaughter pig over traditional genotypes many herds could profit from changing their genetics, says the company.
Producers considering stronger links with the retail market can find out more about the Titan Pork Partners scheme, too. JSR has created a number of successful partnerships between producers, processors and retailers including Titan Pork Partners with Geo Adams Ltd., Sainsburys Taste the Difference Pork with Cranswick and the Muirden range for Marks and Spencer through Grampian Country Foods. The schemes offer much needed added value to all members of the supply chain and are benefiting retailers, processors, producers says JSR. The Titan scheme has been entered into this year’s Pig Fair Innovation Awards and visitors can get a taste of this partnership from bacon sandwiches that will be served on the stand.
JSR will also have new data on Prosperm, a novel feed supplement specifically developed to improve the production and quality of boar semen.

TECHNOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
19 Agrosoft - New website and wealth of data - key tools for herd managementThe recent acquisition of HM Boot’s herd recording business takes Agrosoft to the top spot. It is the UK’s leading pig management software business. The company will launch its new website: www.agrosoftltd.com, a site where pig producers can view the company’s latest developments and tap into an on-line support area designed to provide continual assistance and advice to program users and starters.
Alongside the website, Agrosoft will offer continual demonstrations of its easy use WinPig program, plus advice on how producers can transfer older recording systems to WinPig or start up new packages to suit their individual needs.
Agrosoft has a wealth of technical data and expertise and farmers using its recording system say it aids management decisions and planning. There has been a major shift in the number of herds recording their own data because of its value in assessing business efficiency both physically and financially, says James Nesling, national sales and marketing manager. “During the past year, in addition to the absorption of HM Boot, we have seen a significant number of producers successfully move to or introduce our system.”

20 AM Warkup - on side with feed intakes and buildings efficiency
Building and design specialist AM Warkup is getting into the groove with the innovative new Groovee feeder. The patented design allows pigs to feed side ways on, which is apparently what they prefer. Scientific studies show that pigs rarely face feed troughs head-on and neither the shape or design of the feeder influences this trait. Groovee feeders allow pigs to take food at an angle and may have the potential to reduce waste and enable pigs to maintain an all round view when feeding.
Warkup has also has developed a finishing system in line with the BPEX finishing efficiency project. Aimed at investors and contract finishers with limited or inefficient accommodation, it provides the optimum environment for efficient, cost effective, production.

21 Farmex - Fresh air, and eyes, aids efficiency (pic: Hugh Crabtree with pigs)
Farmex has its eye on production - quite literally. It will be demonstrating Barn Report, a unique pig unit monitoring system. The report has been around for almost 10 years, however economic conditions have meant minimal uptake in the UK. This is difficult to understand, says Hugh Crabtree, managing director, since major savings in energy use and production efficiency improvements of up to 30 per cent have been achieved on units using the system. “For an investment of 50p per finished pig, minimum returns of £2.50 per pig are promised,” he adds. Recent developments in data analysis and reporting methods such as SMS text messaging, together with free training workshops are expected to encourage more producers to use this valuable management tool.
And Farmex is getting back into complete ventilation systems too. After dropping this arm of the business 20 years ago, it now offers a range of packages known as COMPLETE-AIR. The packages are suitable for all stages of production and will be supplied on an installed, commissioned, monitored and maintained basis. “We think professional pig farmers in the UK are ready for a premium system which is properly specified, installed to the highest standards and maintained,” says Hugh Crabtree. “Producers need to ensure every investment delivers a return and by monitoring and maintaining ventilation systems we can make sure they do just that.”
And early birds who visit Farmex’s stand can enjoy a British Bacon Butty from 8.30am – while stocks last!

22 Rotech Livestock Equipment - outdoor and biosecurity benefits
Artificial insemination and livestock equipment specialist Rotech has a new product for outdoor AI users. A step on from its award winning ‘Warm and Go bag’, which maintains the optimum temperature of semen doses until they are required, this new innovation will further improve service routines and operator efficiency, says company director Dick Openshaw. Rotech also specialises in biosecurity. Its range of equipment from Schippers includes carcase chillers and refrigerated storage bins for fallen stock. “Once the service is running, we have the kit to help farmers meet requirements and protect farm biosecurity,” said Mr Openshaw.

23 Quality Equipment - Award winning ways to improve conversions - feed and buildings (photographs: Jetmix,Panel Plus, Incinerators)
Quality Equipment’s Jetmix feeder has evolved since it appeared at the last Pig and Poultry Fair in 2004. The system has already earned a Gold Medal Award for performance in Switzerland, and is proving a winner with UK farmers too. The innovative feeder enables dry rations to be fed wet. It was initially designed for weaned pigs from 8kg to 35kg, but further development means it can now be used to feed pig from weaning through to finishing. The hopper has also been re-designed to rotate, so emptying and cleaning the feeder is much easier.
The Jetmix is pig operated, delivering only small amounts of wetted food at set times. And, because only small portions are mixed at the point of delivery, the system is very hygienic and minimises waste, says the company. The feeder has a simple dispensing mechanism, suitable for meal or pellet diets, and the control panel allows the water/feed ratio to be adjusted to create varying consistencies to suit the pigs being fed.
“The Jetmix’s rotating body allows scrupulous cleaning of the dispensing mechanism and now that antibiotic growth promoters have been removed from feed, hygiene will play an even more important role in pig rearing systems,“ says QE‘s Jamie Baker.
A single feeder can support 50 pigs from seven to 35kgs and 40 pigs from 35kgs to finishing. Producers using the Jetmix report increased feed intake in weaners with improvements of up to 25 per cent in some cases. “It’s due to the very palatable form in which the feed is delivered, wet and fresh,” says Mr Baker. These benefits are also being seen throughout the grower and finishing stages, reducing days to slaughter by up to 14 on some farms.
QE’s award winning Transition Feeder dispenses high quality weaner diets, freshly mixed with water at the point of delivery into the trough. More than 5000 machines have been sold worldwide since its launch in 1999 and this year sees the introduction of a polyethylene moulded hopper with lid that increases the capacity of the feeder to approximately 25kg (a full bag of feed). “While the recommend optimum number of pigs per feeder is 40, we find that farmers do put up to 50 pigs, and sometimes more, on one feeder. The increase in hopper size helps to with the extra capacity,” says Mr Baker. The new hopper has been tested on farm. The main observation is that it is easier to clean and load and the lid improves feed hygiene and security.
Boxing clever…
QE offers a full design service with its Panel Plus range of construction panels. There’s a new addition too; a box-based structure made from 100mm x 50mm squares, which is ideal for making gates, pen divisions and doors. The previous panels, which are still available, are have a 50mm x 50mm structure and are ideal for penning and sectioning complete buildings.
Panel Plus was the choice for a recent conversion of two poultry houses into grower/finisher accommodation.
And, if you’re looking for a solution to fallen stock the TURCO range of incinerators now have full Defra approval. The T1 & T3 are oil-fired machines that are timer controlled and easy to use. Efficient, safe and easy to load, they have a winch to aid filling and a heavy duty pre case fire cement interior to retain heat and optimum incineration temperature.

24 Pfizer Animal Health - Respiratory disease completely controlled (photograph available: Naxcel)
Animal health company Pfizer says it has a total package to help farmers tackle respiratory disease in pigs, both effectively and economically. Market leading pneumonia vaccine Stellamune Once has a new label claim. Pigs that are vaccinated at one week old are now assured full protection against disease from weaning through to finishing. Naxcel, a one-shot, long-acting antibiotic, is a recent addition to Pfizer’s cabinet and it’s finding favour with farmers treating very young pigs. It’s convenient and effective because one dose provides a minimum of seven days cover, so in most cases there is no need for subsequent treatments. It can be used to treat a range of bacterial infections including pneumonia, systemic strep. suis, lameness and septicaemia. It’s other long-action, single-shot, full-therapy drug Draxxin, can be used when managing respiratory diseases associated with moving, say the company. It’s particularly effective against Mycoplasma pneumonia outbreaks in older pigs.

NUTRITION AND FEEDING
26 SCA NuTec – start to finish packageMany producers are already reaping the benefits of SCA NuTec’s nutrition programme for pigs, which includes feeds from creep to finishing rations, all of which include TranZone - an established and well proven technique for controlling gut health.
SCA Tranzone is a package of purpose-designed acidulants, essential oils and functional fibres. It was developed over a seven-year period through Provimi’s international programme in response to the banning of antibiotic growth promoters and more restricted use of zinc and copper sulphate. SCA Tranzone is included in all SCA piglet diets and is available via premixes and concentrates to complement the existing nutritional products. The aim is to provide gut protection from birth through the post-weaning phase and onwards to slaughter weight.
Research work has shown that pigs fed and managed on products using SCA Tranzone make a smoother transition through weaning and continue on a higher plane of feed intake and growth rates right through to finishing weights.A win win situation is offered to pig producers taking advantage of SCA NuTec’s high energy low protein feeds for piglets. This approach to piglet feeding - where net energy is increased and protein levels reduced has paid off in growth benefits and as well as reducing environmental damage through reduced nitrogen in slurries and on pastures and ultimately into water courses. SCA NuTec creep, starter and link diets all take advantage of this advanced technology.

28 Trouw Nutrition - green alternatives to AGPs
By linking extensive research in nutrition and farm management, and combining it with field experience, Trouw Nutrition has developed a portfolio of products designed to help pig producers achieve maximum performance. The bio-security of feed and water can be enhanced by using Selko organic acids, which are designed to help reduce the numbers of potentially harmful enteric bacteria present. Producers using liquid feeds could benefit from Selko RD-Mix and BE Plus as these products can help to reduce losses in dry matter as a result of fermentation. Greenline and Selacid Green Growth offer producers similar benefits to in-feed growth promoters. These antibiotic-free supplements for grower and finisher pigs help to maintain a healthy gut by optimising digestion and gut microflora - the result being better growth performance.

29 Hampshire Feeding Systems - Danish guest ferments liquid benefits
Acidification is under the spotlight for liquid feeders. The controlled fermentation of wet rations, which lowers the pH, offers significant health and performance benefits, says Hampshire Feeding Systems. Fermented liquid diets can reduce the incidence of enteric disease, especially in young weaned pigs. Trials and commercial evidence show benefits in terms of feed intakes, growth, FCR and digestive health. Also, with the flexibility to use co-products within diet formulations, it can significantly reduce feed costs. HFS has data from Danish farms that have achieved the country’s best economic results for the past two years. Also Denmark’s ‘top’ wet feed/fermentation specialist Jens Legarth will be available to share experiences and advise visitors.

31 Barrettine Environmental Health - new insecticides (photographs available of Alpha SST and the Romax secure bait box)
Barrettine Environmental Health is to exhibit at this year’s British Pig and Poultry Fair for the first time. It will feature its Romax range of rodenticides as well as the Romax Bait Boxes along with our new insecticides, Alpha SST and FlyExpyre SST.
Romax Difenacoum and Romax Bromadialone whole wheat products offer an effective solution to rodent problems. As well as the more familiar 3, 10 and 25kgs sacks, both formulations now come in convenient 100g sachets which do not need to be opened as the rodents just eat through the packaging material.
To help prevent the risk of bait reaching non-target species, Barrettine recommends its Romax bait stations for rodenticide placement. The new Romax Secure Bait Box features a mechanism whereby, if the bait station is lifted or tipped up from its position, an internal door shuts so reducing the risk of bait spill.
The new insecticides Alpha-SST and FlyExpyre SST are useful additions to the pesticide store. Both products are packed in convenient soluble sachets that minimise packaging waste and means that there is no contaminated packaging to dispose of. They also offer minimal risk of spillage and operator exposure and provide a very cost effective means of insect control.
Alpha SST, which contains alpha-cypermethrin and tetramethrin, gives excellent knockdown and residual control of flying and crawling insects including poultry red mite and stored product insects. Where insect control is needed in sensitive areas on farm, such as food storage and processing areas, then FlyExpyre SST is the product of choice. Containing the natural active ingredient pyrethrum plus piperonyl butoxide, this product offers a rapid kill and knock-down of a broad range of insects with a reduced risk of resistance developing.

Equipment and buildings33 Air Pollution Products and Systems - Safe and simple odour control
Bringing a breath of fresh air to the show is first time exhibitor Air Pollution Products and Systems (APPS). Its range of innovative, water-based products uses Surficant Induced Absorbtion Technology (SIAT) to bind up bad smells and purify the air. SIAT changes the surface tension of water; making it more absorbent to gases, and these safe and simple treatments can stop odour emissions from a variety of bio-wastes. When sprayed over offending material it attracts the odour particles and then locks them inside water droplets, thus preventing the bad smell. The technology has earned the company a Millennium Award for Innovation and has applications in industry, food processing, compost sites, sewerage plants and medical and domestic situations.
Biotreat 2000, a bacteria/enzyme -based treatment, is for livestock systems. The product is added to water and then sprayed using atomisers over slurry, bedding, or misted throughout the housing. Sprayed over the top of slurry, it can reduce hydrogen sulphide emissions (‘bad egg’ smell) from 1000 parts per million (ppm) to just 4ppm on contact, says the company. Products are only applied when odour levels reach unacceptable levels and treatment can cost as little as 25p an hour. Producers using APPS treatments say they have seen marked improvements. The atmosphere inside buildings is cleaner, the slurry/muck is more pleasant to handle and there has been a reduction in respiratory diseases.

34 RACEnviroment Ltd- Saving energy and costs across the production sector
RACEnviroment will launch two industry-funded reports on sustainable resources use. The documents, one focussed on pig production the other on poultry, are free to all producers. They aim to help all sectors of the pig and poultry industries understand sustainable resource management with suggestions on how operators could improve the way they use resources such as energy and water within their businesses. The reports are the result of an in-depth project to identify opportunities to reduce waste and make savings by reducing use, recycling, re-using or recovery throughout both sectors. They look at legislation, including IPPC, the water protection bill and the climate change levy to name but a few. It also analyses production and processing techniques, marketing and consumerism and the economic value of the pig and poultry industries in the UK. They are interesting and revealing documents that offer a detailed assessment of the impact these sectors have on resources and how changing the way they are managed could benefit efficiency, production costs and the environment.
