Performance figures and production statistics for the new EBX terminal sire now standing at Klasse AI’s studs will be available at the British Pig and Poultry Fair.

The market leading US boar has recently joined Klasse’s range of elite sires and, according to Simon Guise, UK Sales Manager, these genetics tick all the right boxes for the UK pig sector, too.

“This terminal sire is lean, has unrivalled growth performance and offers exceptional conformation and carcase qualities. The EBX is a welcome addition to our range and compliments our selection of proven elite Danish and UK sires,” he explained.

A unique deal between Klasse and Iowa-based breeder Choice Genetics USA means UK producers will be able to access EBX genetics from June 2018.  And both Klasse and its parent company Rattlerow Farms are delighted that another leading genetics company has agreed to work with them to extend its portfolio of stud boars and offers a unique insight into US pig breeding research and development.

Rattlerow Farm’s Managing Director Robert Lawson says Klasse’s mission to harness the very best genetic innovation from around the world and deliver it to the UK production sector, is on track and proving very effective.

“Our core objective is to seek out and secure superior genotypes by working collaboratively with breeders to give them access to our market, while enabling producers here in the UK to benefit from the genetic excellence they can provide. We are delighted that in addition to our excellent relationship with Danbred, we can now add Choice to our genetic partnerships. The expansion of our AI business shows this is a successful formula,” he added.

Proven performer

The EBX is claimed to be one of the leanest, most rapid-growing terminal sires in the world. The French Piétrain-derived boar has been developed by Choice Genetics since 1992 and is commercially proven to deliver excellent early performance post weaning and sustained average daily growth rates of around 950-1000g/day through to slaughter. Commercial pig businesses using this boar have noted substantial benefits to rearing herd performance with marked improvements in daily gain. EBX progeny is robust, vigorous and demonstrates consistently good confirmation, with a high lean meat percentage and exceptionally low back fat levels at 84 kgs deadweight (average P2 is around 10.5mm).

“Feedback from our customers shows there’s a strong demand for these genetics here and our aim is to provide them with what they need to improve their business efficiency in the most convenient and cost-effective way we can,” said Mr Guise.

Visitors to Rattlerow/Klasse’s stand in Hall 2 (No.41) can find out more about Choice’s breeding programme, which evaluates more than 10,000 terminal line boars a year using hi-tech performance tests. They can also hear about its comprehensive meat quality research, which is in-line with the US industry’s commitment to improve pork’s eating quality and taste via improved assessment for valuable carcase traits, such as intra muscular fat content, colour and succulence.

The arrival of EBX boars at Klasse’s stud also coincides with a £750,000 ongoing expansion programme that will increase capacity by at least 40%. The investment has funded additional boar accommodation and collection facilities at all 4 of its studs, plus the installation of some of the latest semen screening, processing and quality control equipment in its labs. Klasse has also appointed 12 new members of staff and commissioned a dedicated ordering line.
